Viewpoint

The title of this workshop draws from a lesson in the world of horsemanship: Approaching a fence at full gallop, the rider must first throw his heart over the fence. The horse will follow.

And so the workshop title and motto: To Throw Your Heart Over The Fence.

The emphasis of the workshop is on human contact, on freedom in relationship with others and within oneself— on freedom to clear the hurdles presented to the human heart.

Course of the Workshop

I begin by simply looking at each participant and the participant looking back, an experience that lasts from about 30 seconds to a few minutes. Afterwards, we discuss this experience and its value in therapy.

I then talk with each individual in whatever order and to whatever purpose each one desires. The participants set the agenda, however he or she wishes. This work varies in length, according to the need of the participant, or 'client'. At the 'client's' discretion, we then begin a general discussion in the group of the work that was just completed, encouraging empathy with the 'client'.

The group also talks openly with me about the process of the work. I answer questions, respond to criticisms, and describe what I observed. Together we explore the dynamics of the experience.

Each person can work with me more than one time. We also have opportunities to role-play interactions with clients whom you may find challenging.

Enrollment

The cost of the workshop is $200. The workshop is approved for 12 hours of CME credits, for MFTs, LCSWs, RNs, and Psychologists (Course # MILO49-0023-000.)

To make reservations, please contact Dr. Stephen Schoen at (415) 472-2780. I will then give the locale of the workshop, easily reached in Terra Linda, San Rafael. If any participants need overnight accommodations, I can recommend a desirable, inexpensive hotel in the neighborhood.
